The Kuching Festival is held annually to maintain part of the city’s plan to boost the local tourism and food industry. Visitors to the festival can enjoy various events held throughout the month of August, including dramatic performances, musical concerts, galleries, exhibitions, essay writing competition and many more. One of the main attractions within the festival is the food fair, a mouth-watering event a festival of this caliber cannot do without.

 

They say two is better than one and this exhibition at the Lavinia Private Gallery celebrates just that. A joint art exhibition featuring contemporary artwork in various media from pottery to painting, presented in pairs.

The Colourcoil TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon is an extreme, outdoor ultra trail marathon catering for experienced, seasoned trail runners wishing to participate in the 55km or 100km category of the event. The 2014 event will be the 4th year of the event and a step up from the traditional Sabah Adventure Challenge race, founded in 1998 by the organizers.

The TMBT is a 3 point qualifying race for the North Face Ultra Du Mont Blanc for the 100k category and a 1 point qualifying race for the 55k category.

The Route

Runners take on a part of Sabah few get to experience in the foothills of native dusun villages.

The event takes runners from the western side of Mount Kinabalu around the base of Mount Kinabalu up the shoulders of the Southern face of Mount Kinabalu and around to the South-Eastern side of Mount Kinabalu to finish in the village of Kundasang.

The race course does not involve a summit climb for safety reasons.

Runners will however be exposed to extreme heat of temperatures of up to 37-38 degree’s celcius or cold temperatures of 14-18 degree’s celcius during wet and windy conditions as runners will be above sea level. Adhering to the mandatory kit listed by the organizers is crucial and absolutely necessary to assist runners in completing the event.

Runners will be independent and need to be experienced enough to handle difficult situations in difficult terrain under possibly difficult weather conditions and acting at all times in a responsible and sensible manner.

Remember the fallen heroes of the Australian and British prisoners-of-war (POW) who endured the notorious Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. A memorial is held on the 15 August every year at the Sandakan Memorial Park, which was once the site of the Prisoners of War camp.

Coalition Duchenne’s is organizing their 4th Annual Expedition to Mt Kinabalu this August. An adventurous international team will be climbing Mt Kinabalu to raise global awareness and funding for research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

World-champion wingsuit pilots will also be joining alongside the international climbers for this year’s event. Set to be the region’s first-ever flyby using a wingsuit, plans call for two flights, to be held on Aug 15-17.

Catherine Jayasuriya founded Coalition Duchenne in 2011 to raise global awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to fund research and to find a cure for Duchenne, which occurs once in 3,500 male births, across all races, cultures and countries.

 

Enjoy a night of black tie and jazz this August during the Macallan Jazz Night at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa in Kota Kinabalu. The Sabah Fitness Festival (SFF) is a first of its kind event and the biggest lifestyle fitness event in East Malaysia. It will be held on 22-24 August, 2014 at Likas Sports Complex Indoor Stadium.

SFF is the gathering of a regional fitness community with the aim to experience, share, and enjoy fitness. SFF provides a platform for exhibitors to showcase their products and services, while attracting local and international participation through a variety of activities.

Sabah Minister of Youth & Sports, YB Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan was present during the press conference and proudly announced the ministry’s support towards SFF. He is very excited about the event which aims to also increase awareness and promote a healthy lifestyle by sharing the joy of fitness. Thus, he encourage the general public who are more than welcome to come and experience the event.

SFF highlights

• 40 exhibition booths for local fitness businesses such as fitness clubs, physio, apparel, equipment, gear, supplements, etc. to showcase their products and services.
• X45 Challenge, the first regional CrossFit competition to be organised in Malaysia. Almost 200 athletes from the region including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu will compete in 5 categories – Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Scaled, Women’s Scaled, and Team Open. CrossFit is an international fitness community that is a leading trend worldwide. The yearly CrossFit Games is a huge competition screened on ESPN, which tests athletes all over the world to find the “Fittest On Earth”.
• Career Talks by Fit Malaysia to provide fitness enthusiasts and sports science graduates with the knowledge on what career opportunities are available and how to succeed in the fitness industry. Fit Malaysia is the region’s leading fitness education provider.
• Group Fitness Party to attract fitness junkies from all walks of life to participate in a variety of programs such as Fitness FX, Les Mills, and Zumba. It will feature top local presenters such as Michelle Koh, and group fitness teams from the top local fitness clubs.

The Malaysia International DJ Championship is back for its second year running. Last year, top deejays from around Malaysia competed for the coveted title and RM5,000 in cash. DJ Fenx representing the Federal Territory of Labuan took home the title and cash. This year, a new format of the competition has been included simply because we wanted more deejays to participate and benefit from the competition even more. Entries are now open and we encourage amateurs or pro-deejays to join.

Sutera Harbour Resort presents the 14th Sutera Harbour 7K Sunset Charity Run 2014. Saturday, August 23, 2014 and be a part of Sabah’s biggest charity event in aid of Sabah Thalassaemia Society and Special Olympics Sabah.
