The Sarawak Regatta 2014 will be happening from September 4 to 7 at Kuching Waterfront, The event will be launched by Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem. Members of the public are invited to participate in various events that will be held on that day.

The Sarawak Regatta is a popular traditional longboats race in Kuching. The longboats are decorated with colourful designs and can accomodate from a few and up to 30 paddlers on the boat. The significant of regattas in Sarawak goes back to the Brooke era.

It started with the intention to stop racial wars among local tribes where headhunting was largely practiced. The Brooke has instructed all tribes to instead challenge each other by having boat races to prove their power and strength. The call to challenge each other through the boat race rather than headhunting was successful in bringing peace to the area. Today, longboat races or regattas are some of the major tourism events in Sarawak.

The Sarawak Regatta, held at the Kuching Waterfront, has become one of the most sought after events in the tourism calendar. Due to the significant history of the regatta, this event is normally held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration.

Activities lined up for Sarawak Regatta

On Sept 4, the regatta will be held in the morning and afternoon. The route of the event will be from the west of Sungai Sarawak to the finishing line, the waters of Kuching Waterfront, over a distance of 2,000 metres. The event is categorised by 30 paddlers who will compete for the title of ‘River King’. The local long boat will be manned by seven to 30 paddlers based on the category contested.

While in the evening, various cultural performances will be showcased for visitors.

On the next day, there will be another round of regatta that will be held from 9am to 10.30am. The public is also invited to patronise the Entrepreneurship Festival and crafts promotion, besides the Food Festival held from 9am to 10pm until Sunday. There will be a total of 60 craft entrepreneurs from throughout the country participating in the Malaysian Crafts Promotion.

‘Pesta Gendang Melayu’ for the children category which will be held from 8.30pm to 10pm on the same day.

The launching ceremony of Sarawak Regatta 2014 on Sept 6, followed by Brooke Swim event, Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta and duck-catching competition that will be held in the morning.

The international category for the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Race event will be held on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. A total of 15 teams from 11 countries will be participating in this event of four categories to win cash prizes. The non-Malay ‘Pesta Gendang Melayu’ will be held in the evening.

On the last day (Sept 7) of the Sarawak Regatta 2014, there will be another round of Sarawak International Dragon Boat race which will start from 9am to 12pm.

The highlight of the regatta will start from 2pm to 4pm. In the evening, the public can witness the ‘Pesta Gendang Melayu’ which will start from 8.30pm to 10pm.

There will be various interesting programmes planned for visitors, such as the participants of EATOF Food Festival which has received participation from 11 countries, namely North Korea, China, Thailand, Japan, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, Indonesia, Filipina and including Malaysia.

The Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will be officiating at the closing ceremony of Sarawak Regatta 2014 on the last day (Sept 7).

This incident has led to various conflicts and heartbreaking experiences which in the end metaphorically lead to the phrase “Ringgit ke Syurga; Money to Heaven”.
