Pulau Mantanani to be developed into tourist attraction
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said Pulau Mantanani has great potential as it has beautiful landscape and diverse marine life that can be a main attraction for local and international tourists alike.
“The islands off Sabah west coast have great potential and, in fact, in Pulau Mantanani not only is its water crystal clear but also it has Mt Kinabalu as its background. Dugong can also be found here,” he said.
Speaking after the meet-the-people session at Pulau Mantanani here, Abdul Rahman, who is also Kota Belud MP, said various facilities like jetties and information office would be set up on the island.
Besides that, 15 villages in the island would be taking part in the homestay programme.
So far, there are eight resorts operating in Pulau Mantanani.
He urged the local community leaders as well as islanders to cooperate in practising a clean and healthy lifestyle.
He said the cleanliness aspect was important considering the island’s status as among the State’s main tourist destinations.
On the solid waste management, Abdul Rahman said a proper management system for the island was being considered by his ministry together with the Kota Belud District Council.
In a related development, Assistant Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Musbah Jamli said the ministry would be implementing the artificial reef project in Pulau Mantanani as among ways to help its people, mostly fishermen, to increase their income.
