Sabah resort operators given 24 hours to clear out all illegal workers
“They have until tomorrow (Wednesday) to remove all illegals working at their premises,” said Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek.
He said the ultimatum, which was given at 3pm Tuesday, was because they would no longer compromise with any resorts employing or harbouring illegal immigrants.
“We know that they are hiding their illegal workers in empty rooms when we come (to check). We will find them sooner or later,” Mohammad said.
In this respect, all resorts in the Esszone districts have also been asked to submit a list of their employees and guests within a week, he said, adding that they were still trying to determine the exact numbers of resorts and homestays in the east coast.
Mohammad said the move was part of immediate measures by Esscom to tighten security along Sabah’s east coast.
He also said resorts could no longer conduct any activities between sunset and sunrise, including night diving, without special permission from Esscom.
It also asked resorts to put up perimeter fencing, install CCTVs and floodlights, employ trained security guards, erect surveillance towers, and put in place standard operating procedures in the event of emergencies, among others.
He said these measures had to be in place as soon as possible, and would be taken into consideration during renewal of resort licenses at the end of the year.
