Sabah Masters ready to ignite Asean Pga Tour
The Sabah Tourism Board has helped to revive the event in 2011 after a 10-year hiatus and they have now further cemented the commitment.
“Having extended our commitment for the Sabah Masters, we will embark on a new campaign to reinforce the tournament’s status as the Tour Championship of the Asean Professional Golf Association (ASEAN PGA) Tour.
“The Sabah Masters has been the season-ending event for the past two years and its growing success has inspired a year-long countdown for players eligible to play in the event based on the Order of Merit.
“The campaign is an effort to promote Sabah Tourism and also Sabah as a premier golfing destination in Southeast Asia,” said Joniston in a press conference here Thursday.
In order to attract more top regional golfers at the event, he added that the Sabah Tourism Board would increase the prize money at the next tournament.
“We hope to increase the total prize money to USD100,000 (about RM330,000) and to do so, we need more sponsorship,” said Joniston.
The past two editions of the Sabah Masters offered prize money of USD75,000 (about RM245,000) including the 2013/2014 edition held at the Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club from Jan 8 to 11 and won by Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat.
“Each year the tournament has attracted a very strong field. So many of our region’s top players want to play in the Sabah Masters. The tournament fits perfectly as a Tour Championship event that they have to battle to get into,” he added.
The Sabah Masters is a tournament where the Order of Merit champion is crowned and where the leading players from the Merit list earn their OneAsia cards.
