Unsightly Likas Bay beachfront

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 17: The beachfront at Likas Bay has become extremely unsightly and dirty after tonnes of rubbish were washed ashore from nearby islands as well as the drains and rivers.

“I was notified by the people who visited the beachfront recently who were shocked to see the sorry state of the beach. They called on us for assistance to call the right authorities to come and clear the rubbish immediately.

“The area is under the Likas constituency but anyhow we could help without much difficulty. My assistant cum Bureau Chief of Welfare and Health, Simon Yap Yen Fung was immediately dispatched to check on the complaint,” said Hiew.

He added that City Hall had engaged a contractor to collect the rubbish on the beach regularly but it is a rather difficult job because the rubbish keeps on coming.

“People are continuously throwing their rubbish into the sea, river and drains and these rubbish eventually end up on the beachfront during high tides,” said Hiew.

In the meantime, Yap said the people should bear in mind that this bad habit could eventually damage the environment.

“I hope people would be more civic minded and not throw their rubbish especially plastic items into the sea, drains and rivers. People on the islands should instead create their own dumping ground on the island instead of throwing their waste into the sea,” said Yap.

He added that the work to clear the rubbish is costing the government huge sum of money and it is the taxpayers’ money they are using. Without the rubbish cleaning, the money could have been used for other purposes to benefit the people.
